Festival of Food and Faith Overview
Saturday, October 27, 2007, 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The church began as a meal fellowship. Jesus broke bread with disciples and shared table fellowship with social outcasts, and the first Christians practiced radical table hospitality in Jesus’ name. Today, the church still gathers for Eucharist (the Lord’s Supper), and many congregations also share other meals together and provide food for those who are hungry in their own neighborhoods and around the world. In a time of widespread concern about what we eat and how food is produced and distributed, might Christian practices of life at table hold untapped wisdom for those who seek to eat in ways that are good for them, for others and for Creation?
The Festival of Food and Faith will explore ways in which Christian faith can inform daily food practices theologically and sacramentally in regard to:
• the health of our bodies (nurture, nutrition)
• the access others have to food (hunger, justice, gluttony)
• the health of the earth, which our food choices influence (food production
and the environment)
• extending hospitality and enriching relationships
(feasting, sharing, comforting)
Conference leaders will present strategies for teaching about this topic in congregations, emphasizing that “just eating” opens the door to a way of life that honors the body—our own bodies, the bodies of others, the earth’s body, the Body of Christ. We will recognize regional efforts that promote this way of life and that move people toward action and political agency.
The Festival of Food and Faith will celebrate good food produced by just and sustainable practices. Designed to include children and youth as well as adults, this festive event will be grounded in Christian faith perspectives and liturgy, yet broadly ecumenical.
